I really enjoyed Solar Power, so when this album came out, I was cautiously optimistic. I had heard What Was That as a single, and although I liked parts of it, what really disappointed me was the anti-climactic drop. It builds up superbly and then just kinda deflates inconsequentially. This made me slightly worried that the whole album would feel like this, and these worries were unfortunately realised. She builds catchy melodies throughout Virgin, but often does nothing with them, namely on Hammer, What Was That and Current Affairs. As a result, there's nothing here that leaves a strong impression. This isn't aided by its length, it quickly slips by at just 34 minutes. The song-writing here is classic Lorde, albeit this time exploring her relationship with her gender and her body, and the complications that come with both. "Some days I’m a woman/Some days I’m a man", While not her worst release, it doesn't hold up to the highs of Solar Power for me.
