The Man with the Axe
Where has this Lorde been hiding? Incredible funky, summery tunes here. She's actually singing for the most part, rather than those spoken word type vocals she'd been running before, although they do make an appearance in places. Listening to this album puts you lying on a nice, quiet beach in the shade, gentle breeze and a drink in hand. Lorde explores themes of solipsism, escapism and connecting with nature. She writes thoughtfully about figuring out how to slow down and enjoy life. The lyrics talk a lot about getting away from everything and finding peace in nature. It feels personal and relaxed, like she’s just sharing her thoughts while lying in the sun. The music is chill and not too busy, so her voice and the words really stand out. Songs like Stoned at the Nail Salon and Fallen Fruit are a bit sad, but in a quiet, pretty way. Solar Power might not be as intense as her older stuff, but it’s calm and honest, which is an improvement if you ask me.
