Lana Del Rey has a very "Marmite" voice, you either really like it, or it gets old pretty fast. Personally, I like her voice, it's very classy, which ties well into a lot of the imagery on this album. Very classic Americana, American dream, consumerism, apple pies and white picket fences. Constant mentions of red, white and blue, old Hollywood and materialism, Off To The Races is a great example. As much as she seems to revere this, she also explores the dark side of it, toxic relationships, addiction, abuse, Carmen comes to mind. Lana is very good at painting vivid pictures with these songs, some of them feel like movies playing out such as Off To The Races and This Is What Makes Us Girls. I was surprised at how many of these songs I actually recognised. Great production, great performances, overall an enjoyable album.
