A beautifully written album exploring, among other things, identity, grief and war. Mon Rovîa, named for the capital of Liberia, has a smooth, relaxing voice, and when paired with the warm acoustic guitar he wields expertly, magic happens. Wholly immersive and enthralling, this whole project allows you to just melt into the melodies and feel his words. Born in Liberia and adopted by an American family as a child, he explores bright and dark parts of each countries past; the civil war in Liberia and the people that made a stand, slavery in America. On the title track, explores what it means to be Liberian, whether being raised in America weakened his identity, and on the opening track, he revisits his earliest memories. Bloodlines is such a thoughtful, gentle reflection of himself and his experiences, backed with lush vocals and soothing instrumentals. I'll have this on repeat for sure.
