Wow. I wasn't sure how well Bon Iver would be able to follow For Emma, Forever Ago, but they managed to create another fantastic album. Just as depressing as the first, this self-titled album works hard to pull you into the lyrics about loss, isolation and healing. The production on this album is fuller and more present than on the debut, which both serves it and works against it. There is a loss of closeness and rawness, but quickly made up for by how involved this new instrumentation feels, Calgary is a great example. It has it's steady electric guitar in the back, but you could easily imagine it stripped back, minimal production, being recorded alone in a cabin in the woods, like FEFA was. Beth/Rest on the other hand is the opposite. It is way too overproduced, and could have benefitted greatly from a lot less attention.
